Navigation- WHAT IS MAKANI?keyboard_arrow_downMakani is the official geographic addressing system in the emirates: Dubai – Ajman – Fujairah - Ras Al Khaimah - Umm Al Quwain. Makani means my location in Arabic and it consists of 10 digit numbers only called “Makani Number”. Each Makani Number gives you the location of the entrance of a building. The main purpose of creating this system is to make it easy for all to find places and navigate using electronic maps in smart phones, tablets, computers and navigation systems.
- WHAT IS GEO-ADDRESS?keyboard_arrow_downMakani Number is derived from an universal geographic coordinate standard to ensure locating the entrance of each building with high accuracy (high precision level) using electronic map. As Makani Number has geographic reference for its location, each Makani Number will be unique for locating any entrance in the emirates.
- IS MAKANI GOING TO REPLACE TRADITIONAL ADDRESSING SYSTEM?keyboard_arrow_downMakani geo-addressing system complements the traditional building addressing system and doesn't replace it. With Makani you must use electronic map or navigation system..
- IS MAKANI GOING TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE WHOLE UAE?keyboard_arrow_downIt is not confirmed yet but a draft has been prepared for the Supreme Council to use Makani in UAE as a complement to traditional addressing system. Currently the project has been implemented at the level of Emirate of Dubai, Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, Emirate of Ajman, Emirate of Fujairah and Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
- ON WHAT PLATFORM MAKANI APPLICATION WORKS?keyboard_arrow_downMakani is available on Android, iOS, mobile and on the web platform (www.makani.ae).
- HOW CAN I FIND OUT MY BUILDING MAKANI NUMBER?keyboard_arrow_downThere are several ways to know Makani Number for your house or building, as following:
- Providing your building address in the “Building Address” search.
- Finding your house or building on the map and touching the center of it.
- From the Makani plate which is fixed at the building entrance. - CAN I SEARCH FOR SHOPS OR OTHER POINT OF INTEREST(POI) IN MAKANI?keyboard_arrow_downYes, you can search for point of interest or shop name by typing or mentioning its name in the general search field.
- WHY MAKANI NUMBER IS LONG TEN DIGIT NUMBER, I CAN NOT REMEMBER IT?keyboard_arrow_downYou don't need to remember the 10 digits. You can do any of the followings:
1. Add Makani Number to your contact to save it in your device.
2. Save the photo for Makani Plate and there is a feature in the application to locate the place of the plate.
3. Save the place with Makani Number as your favourite place.
4. Once you type the first five or six digits of Makani Number in general search field, the application will list the remaining numbers. - CAN I USE MAKANI WITHOUT INTERNET?keyboard_arrow_downSome of the Makani app’s features like map, search and navigation without Internet connection. To activate this feature, you can download the offline data while launching the application on your device for the first time or download the data in “Settings” icon. From the subsequent usage of the application, the previously saved offline maps will be used. If any application feature needs internet connectivity, an alert message will be presented. (e.g.: satellite imagery and live traffic status).
- WHAT IS GEO-TAGGED PHOTO?keyboard_arrow_downSmartphones / tablets can capture photos with the location embedded within them. You can enable camera phone to geo-tagged the photo by allowing this permission in the device’s setting for camera. By using “Scan” icon in the Makani, you can access the geo-tagged photo from the device’s photo folder in order to see the location on the map.

About Us:
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center. The center was established through a decree (Law No. 6, 2001) of the Ruler of Dubai, the late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The law stipulated that the GIS Center is considered to be the only official body which allows producing geographical data in the Emirate. GIS Center is considered as an official portal to provide geographical data services, images and spatial maps of Dubai to governmental bodies, the private sector and individuals.

Makani project is developed by GIS Center and it’s the official geo-addressing system in Emirate of Dubai; endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Makani Number is 10 digit numbers which uniquely indentify each main entrance of all completed building with precision level 1 square meter. The objective is simplifying the addressing system and facilitating the use of it among the society (personal use and business use) to locate places with high accuracy and enjoy navigation in Emirate of Dubai, Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, Emirate of Ajman, Emirate of Fujairah and Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
We are pleased with joining Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, Emirate of Ajman, Emirate of Fujairah and Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah to Makani project and the Makani addressing will be provided for the emirates through Makani App.
